Web, Multimedia and Video Requirements

New brand campaign and the web

University Relations, Communications and Marketing has developed new templates for the web that support the new university brand campaign. In order to have your site converted over to the new template please submit a general ticket request through Central Web Support at webadmin.unt.edu. If you have a webmaster within your department, and would like to make the changes internally, please send an e-mail to brandreview@unt.edu and we will assist in getting you the required assets. Please wait until we can provide technical assistance prior to executing this change.

Branded Web Headers

Because visitors to university websites may come from search engines or other websites without visiting our homepage first, it is imperative that the user experience reinforces the identity of the university and our new brand campaign at every touch point. To accomplish this objective the department of University Relations, Communications and Marketing (URCM) has developed some guidelines and new web headers that will ensure a consistent experience for our users. The following information regarding new branded web headers and their use is provided to clarify these guidelines. Beginning April 1, 2012 please submit a ticket at https://webadmin.unt.edu/ to initiate updating your site over to the new brand campaign theme.

Web header for use at www.unt.edu

The main University of North Texas web site, or www.unt.edu, supports this new theme initiative by using this version of the web header. This web header should only be used on www.unt.edu and others should not attempt to replicate it on department level college, school, division, center or faculty member sites.

This header places the web-site name in the upper left to clearly identify the current web site to visitors. Colleges, schools, divisions, centers or faculty member sites should be using this version of the web header to reinforce the university brand.

The UNT mark requirements

The UNT lettermark is required to be featured in the right-hand header of all university websites and cannot be altered from its original form or approved colors. The UNT lettermark must also be linked back to the UNT home page (http://www.unt.edu). A link back to the main home page gives a web visitor the opportunity to find additional information about UNT. This is especially important for visitors that have used a search engine, such as Google, to jump directly to a page deep within UNT's website.

University web templates

With the university's adoption of Drupal as the supported Content Management System solution, web design and development has become more standardized across official UNT websites. Web templates have been created that include the approved header formats, colors and required data elements. Use of the web template is required as new sites are created or existing sites are transferred into Drupal. The UNT template is used by default when a new site is created within the Drupal environment.

To aid in the process, URCM's Online Communications and Creative Services team is available to assist campus members in how to apply web templates, create sites in Drupal and help with general planning to make sure that the site meets departmental goals.

A specific team from URCM's Online Communications and Creative Services make up the Web Development Center. This center and its staff were developed to help campus academic (colleges, schools and departments) and student service units in developing modern and user-friendly websites to meet departmental goals. Members of the WDC have expertise and experience in:

  • Content strategy
  • Writing
  • Electronic marketing
  • Information architecture
  • Drupal
  • Programming
  • Accessibility
  • UNT compliance
  • Social media
  • Online videos
  • Visual design

If you have to use an external vendor or an independent web contractor due to resource limitations or short timelines, the finished site is still subject to UNT's graphic standards and web compliance policies. URCM's staff will assist you in communicating all institutional requirements to your outside agency or contractor and schedule a pre-launch audit.

When you first begin planning a site redesign or the creation of a new UNT website, schedule an appointment with the Online Communications and Creative Services staff or the Web Development Center by calling 940-565-3503 or send an email to nancy.kent@unt.edu. We will assist you in all stages of planning for your website.

Colors

UNT's official colors are green and white. Black can be used as a tertiary color to add to the available color palette. Additional colors can be used sparingly for page-level elements within a website as long as they are seen as accents and the primary design is using UNT's official colors. The UNT web design templates include all elements, which are officially approved by the university, for creating a consistent brand experience across all official websites. If you need to create supplemental graphics or matching colors for additional elements within your web pages, the following color model settings will reproduce UNT green in most graphic design and HTML coding software:

  • Hex color for UNT green:
    #00853E
  • HSL color model for UNT green:
    Hue 93
    Sat 224
    Lume 70
  • RGB color model for UNT green:
    Red 5
    Green 144
    Blue 51

Additional Web Requirements

All websites that are created in support of UNT business functions or that are hosted on UNT web servers, except personal websites, must also follow additional UNT policies and guidelines:

Exceptions

Most UNT websites are required to follow all UNT and institutional branding policies and guidelines but there are legitimate exceptions. Schedule an appointment with the Online Communications and Creative Services staff by calling 940-565-3503 or email nancy.kent@unt.edu. All exceptions must be approved before a site can be published to UNT's web domain.
